Improvements to Interstate 49 Require Overnight Lane Closures in Washington County

WASHINGTON COUNTY (5-26) – Construction work on I-49 in Johnson and Springdale requires overnight lane closures on I-49, according to Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) officials.
Beginning on Tuesday night, May 31, crews will continue overlaying the existing roadway between Johnson Mill Boulevard (Exit 69) and U.S. Highway 412 (Exit 72). Northbound and southbound lanes on I-49 will alternately be closed during this time period between mile markers 68 and 72 to allow for construction.
The overnight lane closures will occur nightly starting on Tuesday, May 31 and ending Friday morning, June 3, weather permitting. Traffic will be controlled using signage and barrels.
Northbound I-49 lane closures will occur between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
Southbound I-49 lane closures will occur between 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
The work was originally scheduled this week, but postponed due to weather.
This project is part of AHTD's Connecting Arkansas Program and includes widening
4.5 miles of I-49 to three lanes in each direction. The work extends from U.S. Highway 71B in Johnson to U.S. Highway 412 in Springdale. The project is anticipated to be complete in late 2016. More information on this $28.3 million project is available at ConnectingArkansasProgram.com.
