WASHINGTON COUNTY (7-25) – Construction work on I-49 in Springdale requires overnight lane closures on U.S. Highway 412, according to Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) officials.

Beginning at 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27, crews will be removing safety platforms from the I-49 overpass above U.S. Highway 412 (Exit 72). Once the platforms are removed, crews will begin painting the new steel girders. Eastbound and westbound lanes on U.S. Highway 412 between the I-49 ramp intersections will alternately be closed to allow for construction. Single-lane traffic will be maintained in each direction during the work. In addition, all traffic may intermittently be stopped for 15-minute periods as needed. Main lane traffic on I-49 will not be affected.

The overnight lane closures will occur Sunday through Thursday nights from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. starting on Wednesday, July 27 and ending Friday, August 12, weather permitting. Traffic will be controlled using signage, barrels and flaggers.

This project is part of AHTD's Connecting Arkansas Program and includes widening
4.5 miles of I-49 to three lanes in each direction. The work extends from U.S. Highway 71B in Johnson to U.S. Highway 412 in Springdale. The project is anticipated to be complete in late 2016. More information on this $28.3 million project is available at ConnectingArkansasProgram.com.

Drivers should exercise caution when approaching and traveling through all highway work zones. Additional travel information can be found at IDriveArkansas.com or ArkansasHighways.com. You can also follow us on Twitter @AHTD.
