WASHINGTON COUNTY (8-18) – Construction work on I-49 in Johnson and Springdale requires overnight lane closures on I-49, according to Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) officials.

Work continues Sunday night, August 21, as crews will place pavement markings and the shoulder rumble strip on the inside and outside lanes on northbound and southbound lanes of I-49. The work will extend north of U.S. Highway 71B (Exit 67) in Johnson and U.S. Highway 412/Sunset Avenue (Exit 72) in Springdale. The inside and outside lanes of I-49 will alternately be closed during this time period to allow for construction.

The overnight lane closures will occur nightly starting on Sunday, August 21 and ending Friday morning, August 26, weather permitting. Traffic will be controlled using signage and barrels.

Northbound I-49 lane closures will occur between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
Southbound I-49 lane closures will occur between 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.

This project (Job CA0401) is part of AHTD's Connecting Arkansas Program and includes widening 4.5 miles of I-49 to three lanes in each direction. The work extends from U.S. Highway 71B in Johnson to U.S. Highway 412 in Springdale. The project is anticipated to be complete in late 2016.
