LITTLE ROCK (9-2)Construction work on Interstate 49 in Johnson will require overnight lane closures on Johnson Mill Boulevard, according to Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) officials.

The contractor will be installing a safety platform for bridge work over Johnson Mill Boulevard. Eastbound and westbound lanes will alternately be reduced to one lane between the east and west Interstate 49 access ramp intersections. Mainline traffic on Interstate 49 will not be affected.

The lane closures will begin Tuesday night, September 8 and take up to four nights, completing by Saturday morning, September 12, weather permitting. The closures will be in effect 11:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m. each night. Traffic will be controlled using flaggers and barrels.

This project is part of AHTD's Connecting Arkansas Program and includes widening 4.5 miles of Interstate 49 to three lanes in each direction. The work extends from Highway 71B in Johnson to Highway 412 in Springdale. The project is anticipated to be complete in late 2017. More information on this $28.3 million project is available at ConnectingArkansasProgram.com.

Motorists should exercise caution when approaching and traveling through all highway work zones. Additional travel information can be found at IDriveArkansas.com or ArkansasHighways.com. You can also follow us on Twitter @AHTD.
